Social work is a career that finds and chooses you, rather than you selecting it. Social work has always been an immense portion of my life even when I had no recollection of what social work entailed. My life revolved around so many situations that had a social worker stepped in, my life would be totally different than it is today. Many individuals and agencies lack the compassion and empathy for oppressed people. Having been in many circumstances, has given me the experience and background that influenced me to go into social work, as well as the understanding of my role and responsibilities that I will assume as a professional social worker, and my reasons for selecting the program at ASU School of Social Work and thoughts on how the Mission Statement addresses my career goals. Sexually ac tive teenagers have considerably higher rate of unintended pregnancies than sexually active women of the older age. Proportion of young pregnant women who did not wanted to become pregnant increased on about 10 per cent for the last 20 years (Advancing sexual and reproductive health worldwide through research, policy analysis and public education , 2015). Statistical information concerning distribution of unintended pregnancies by mother’s age is presented in the table 1 (Mosher, Jones, Abma, Division of Vital Statistics, 2012). Figures in this table show that women at the age from 15 to 19 years old have considerably higher rate of unintended pregnancies. It is notable that more than 75 per cent of these pregnancies are mistimed, which means that the majority of these women wanted to become pregnant in future. It is noteworthy that number of unintended pregnancies is also dependent on the marital status of women. This statement is supported by figures in the table 2 (Mosher et al., 2012). Figures in this table show that unmarried and not cohabiting women represent the highest rate of pregnant women whose pregnancy is unwanted and mistimed. Unmarried and not cohabiting pregnant women from 15 to 24 years old have the highest rate of unintended pregnancies. Married pregnant women from 24 to 44 years old have the lowest rate of unintended pregnancies. The relevant information is presented in the table 3 (Mosher et al., 2012). Existing medical programs provide help to young women. According to the official statistics, about 68 per cent of expenses on unplanned birth were covered by different public insurance programs, for example, Medicaid (Advancing sexual and reproductive health worldwide through research, policy analysis and public education, 2015). This figure is different in different states. The highest rates of unplanned birth covered by public insurance programs are in the District of Columbia (more than 80 per cent) and in Mississippi (more than 70 per cent) (Advancing sexual and reproductive health worldwide through research, policy analysis and public education, 2015). Both federal and governmental structures are involved in financing of unintended pregnancies. For example, 70 per cent of this financing (about $14 billion) was provided by federal programs, and about 30 per cent of this financing (about $ 6 billion) was provided by state programs (Advancing sexual and reproductive health worldwide through research, policy analysis and public education, 2015). Title X is one of federal programs directed on the improvement of family planning and minimization of unintended pregnancies. In the previous year, more than 1 million of unintended pregnancies and 34 per cent of abortions in the country were avoided due to this program (State Facts about Title X and Family Planning: California, 2014). Also, Title X provides financial support to low income women. Women, Infants and Children program is one more family planning program that provides help in planning of child birth and avoiding unplanned pregnancies in the USA. The primary goal of the above mentioned programs is to provide family planning support, improve people’s physical and mental health, and minimize abortions. It should be noted that abortion rate increased for about 5 per cent for the last 7 years, while unintended pregnancies in about 60 per cent of cases have ended by abortions (Advancing sexual and reproductive health worldwide through research, policy analysis and public education, 2015). Most women consciously put themselves at a risk by not using contraceptives or â€Å"who are using them inconsistently, represent one-third of all women at risk of unintended pregnancy and account for 95% of the three million unintended pregnancies that occur every year† (State Facts about Title X and Family Planning: California, 2014). These women have insufficient understanding of importance of birth planning and negative consequences of unplanned pregnancy. Unplanned pregnancy can be prevented by a great variety of options: condo ms, hormonal intrauterine device, pills, special rings, etc. The main advantage of these options is that they can be used by women of different ages, income, and marital status. These options are readily available all over the country. Most of them have almost 100 per cent effectiveness of pregnancy prevention. Description of these options and methods and their negative and positive sides should be provided by state and federal organizations through specially developed programs. Counter-Argument Despite the above-mentioned advantages of numerous birth control options, they still have some disadvantages. The great variety of low-cost contraceptives can lead to the riskier sexual behavior of youth. Margaret Brown in her work Public health and contraception (2006) stated the following idea: â€Å"contra-contraception movement is based primarily on religiously-inspired concerns that access to contraception of any form promotes promiscuity and free sexual expression outside marriage†. Moreover, the majority of contraceptives (spermicides, female dependent barriers, hormonal contraceptives, etc.) do not provide total protection against sexually transmitted diseases. For example, the use of spermicides leads to the decrease of the possibility of gonorrhea infection only by about twenty five per cent, and cervical chlamydia by about twenty two per cent; female dependent barriers grant low rate of protection against candidiasis (Sanghvi, n.d.). Also, some women cannot use cont raceptives because of different health conditions like history of blood clots, migraine headaches, endometrial cancer, and many others. For example, women who have diabetes related diseases should not take contraceptive pills. Birth Control Helps the Nation to Be Stronger Economically Efficient family planning, decreasing the rate of unintended pregnancy, and lowering the rate of abortion provide such a benefit as decreasing of additional governmental expenses. According to official studies, â€Å"public funding for contraceptive services in 2010 resulted in net public savings of $10.5 billion, or $5.68 for every dollar spent providing contraceptive care† (Frost, Zolna, Frohwirth, 2013). Instead of granting health care services to women with unintended pregnancy, the government can direct this finance on other spheres of social life, for example, education. Moreover, family planning prevents the nation from overpopulation. The decrease of the rate of unintended pregnancy will lead to the decrease of the rate of birth of unwished children who cannot be economically supported by their families and government. These children will not be able to obtain sufficient health care, education, job, and place or relevant position in the society. Birth control helps to minimize these issues. Birth Control Helps in Family Planning Birth control helps young couples to plan the number of children. Application of different contraceptive methods enables people to attain the desired number of children and state spacing between pregnancies. A couple determines whether its financial position and relations are strong enough for having one more child. It is notable that about 10 per cent of women who planned their pregnancies and stopped smoking in 3 months after they become pregnant, have the lower risk of diabetes, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and postpartum depression (by about 5.1 per cent) (Tailor Cabral, 2002). Moreover, â€Å"women whose pregnancies are unintended are less likely to breastfeed† (Tailor Cabral, 2002). All the above mentioned female health problems caused by unintended pregnancy decrease their lives and empowerment, as women feel themselves suppressed and unsatisfied. Also, planned pregnancies enable making some pauses between pregnancies. Pauses of more than 18 months between pregnancies lead to decreasing a possibility of having low weight or premature babies by about 3 per cent (Tailor Cabral, 2002). These pauses also decrease the risk of undeveloped immune system, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular diseases, obesity, asthma, leukemia, diabetes, and SIDS. Affordable Birth Control Leads to Reduction of Rate of Abortion among the Youth This paper shows that young women have the highest rate of unintended pregnancies and abortions. More than half of teen pregnancies end by abortions (Kost, Henshaw, 2014). The main reasons of abortions are the following: an understanding that having a child will derail reaching of their personal goals; unwillingness to take financial responsibilities; immaturity, etc. Teen abortions lead to numerous personal psychological problems, like severe emotional injures, troubles in future relationships with others, alcohol abuse, suicidal behavior, and self-destruction. According to the official research, a parent-child communication concerning sexual activity leads to increasing the use of condoms during the first intercourse by about 20 per cent (Philliber Research Associates, SRI International – Center for Education Human Services, University of California, San Francisco – Institute for Health Policy Studies, 2003) The current paper provides an understanding that the great amount of unintended pregnancies, especially among the young generation, represents a great issue today. In this guide, we offeryou step-by-step instructions on how to calculate PSAT scores. To begin, we'll look at how the PSAT is scored and what â€Å"equating† means. We'll then go overhow to calculate various PSAT scores before finishing with an explanation on how a PSAT score calculatorcan help you get the PSAT score you want. How Is the PSAT Scored? The PSAT is scored on a scale of 320-1520 in 10-point increments. Your total PSAT scoreis the sum of your Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) section scores. (EBRW is a combination of your Reading and Writing and Language scores). These two sections areeach scored on ascale of 160-760, which is equivalent to half the total score range. But there aren't 1,520 questions on the PSAT, sowhere do these numbers come from? In reality,your Math and EBRW scores start outas raw scores. These additional scores offer a closer, more detailed analysis of your performance on particularcontent areas and question types on the PSAT. Read on to learn how to calculate PSAT subscores and cross-test scores. Subscores To calculate your subscores, start by finding your raw scores for each of the following subscore categories: Math Heart of Algebra Problem Solving and Data Analysis Passport to Advanced Math EBRW Expression of Ideas Standard English Conventions Words in Context Command of Evidence Add up your correct answers on Math and EBRW using their respective answer keys. To find your raw cross-test scores, use your scoring guide to determine which EBRW and Math questions make upwhich cross-test categories. Below is an example of a cross-test score overview for the Analysis in Science score: Once you have your raw scores for both cross-test scores, use your test’s raw score conversion table for cross-test scores to figure out your scaled cross-test scores for History/Social Studies and Science. Scaled cross-test scores use a scale of 8-38 (note that this is different from the 1-15 scoring scale used for subscores). Soif I were to receive a raw score of 19 on Analysis in Science, my scaled cross-test score for that area would equal 29: How to Calculate National Merit Selection Index Finally, there’s the National Merit Selection Index score. Unlike the other scores we’ve covered so far, you won’t find any conversion table for your Selection Index ona PSAT practice test. So how can you calculate this score? Here are the steps to take: 1. Find your Reading and Writing test scores. To find these scores, calculate your raw scores for Reading and Writing and then use your raw score conversion table to convert your raw scoresinto scaled testscores (on a scale of 8-38). 2. Find your Math test score. Unlike your Reading and Writing scores, your Math test score isn’t on a conversion chart. So how do you find this score? First,get your Math section score by matching your raw Math score to its corresponding scaled score on your conversion table. Then, to get your Math test score, simply divide your Math section score by 20. So ifmy scaled Math score were 680, my Math test score would be 680/20=34. 3. Add your test scores together. Next, combine your Reading, Writing, and Math test scores. This will give you a total PSAT test score on a scale of 24-4. 4. Multiply your total test score by 2. Finally, take your total PSAT test score and multiply it by 2 to get your Selection Index. Once again, the Selection Index score range is 48-228. In the end, if you’re aiming for a scholarship, you’ll need to have a Selection Index high enough to qualify you for National Merit in your particular state. These cutoff Selection Index scores range anywhere from 209-222. For example, let’s say your total PSAT goal score is 1300, or 640 on Math and 660 on EBRW. To get 640 on Math, you’ll need to scorearound 34-38 raw points, or get 34-38 questions right. (We calculated this estimated raw score range using the official conversion tables for PSAT Practice Test #1 and #2.) Figuring out the number of questions you'll need to get right for EBRW, however, requires you to do more than just look at a conversion table. You'll first need to divide your EBRW goal score (in this case, 660) by 10 to get your EBRW test score. Then, divide this score by 2 to get your estimated test scores for the Reading and Writing sections. Finally, use official conversion tables to get a corresponding raw scorefor each of these two test scores. In my example, a 660 EBRW goal score equals about 38-39raw points for Reading and 37-38 raw pointsfor Writing. Of course, these raw score ranges are all simply estimates. Because the College Board doesn’t tell us ahead of time how raw scores for upcoming PSATs will be equated, there’s no way to know for sure how many questionsyou’ll need to answer correctly in order to hityour goal scores. From this central idea, one would realize that regret is a common human experience that happens in every possible scenario involving human relationships: in the family, with peers or teachers in school, with community members, and with other people where interpersonal relationships have been exchanged. . The rise of National Socialism in post-WWI Germany is an understandable reaction to the problems of the Versailles Peace Treaty, considering the German attitudes and beliefs at the time. These attitudes and beliefs were the result of generations of Prussian militarism, extreme racist nationalism, and, most importantly, the failure of the Treaty of Versailles signed in June of 1919. The rise of the Nazi party, and their extremist National Socialist doctrine appealed directly to these attitudes and beliefs that permeated Germany society after the first World War. Since the unification of Germany in the late 19th century, attitudes of nationalism, Prussian militarism and expansionism saturated German society. As one can clearly see in the writings of the influential German historian, Heinrich von Treitschke, war and territorial expansion were seen as being necessary to the preservation and advancement of German society. He states that, â€Å"War is for an afflicted people the only remedy†¦ Those who preach the nonsense about everlasting peace do not understand the life of the Aryan race, the Aryans are before all brave.† The mobilization of the people and resources, for the purpose of making war, were believed to be the means of preservation and advancement of German society. These ultra-nationalistic attitudes and beliefs resulted in widespread German enthusiasm with the coming of war in 1914. As expressed in a German newspaper, The Post, â€Å"Another forty years of peace would be a national misfortune for Germany.† With the armistice that took effect November 11,1918, the Great War had come to an end, four long years after it had begun. The German military machine had lost the war, and with it, hopes of German dominance in European affairs.
